We recently published an article on insurance options and the cost of addiction treatment. In this article, we made a brief reference to Amethyst Recovery’s free referral service; however, we did not elaborate very much on what this free referral service entails. We would now like to clarify a little bit on this very issue, so that those who need this service might come to understand it a little better.
The main points on which we wish to elaborate are what this free referral service entails, the general process and steps by which it works, and the various reasons for why it is important to us. We believe that these three main points will help those who wish to enter our programs come to understand their options a little bit better. We will also conclude by talking a little bit about some of the other major benefits offered by Amethyst Recovery. We hope that this information will be of some use to you, whether you are seeking treatment for yourself or for someone you love.
What Is a Free Referral Service?
If you have ever required help from someone within the legal profession while you were short on funds, then you have probably heard the term “free referral service” before. Its usage here is not much different. A free referral service is basically a service which helps clients (or in this case, patients) to receive the services they need. As is implied by the term itself, the patient is not charged a single penny for the provision of this service. It is simply a procedure which is undertaken as a result of their request to receive care.
The primary benefit of a free referral service is that, regardless of whether or not we are actually able to place the patient within one of our own programs, they will be able to rest assured that they will receive all of the information they need to seek the treatment they require. In other words, if we can’t help them, we’ll find out who can. Different facilities offer different levels of care, and some are able to accept insurance options that other facilities cannot accept for one reason or another. It can be difficult for some patients to make sense of this information, which can be very frustrating in situations where there is a clear need for a patient to enter treatment as soon as possible.
If this is the case, there is no reason to feel ashamed. Insurance packages are often complex, and those who do not deal with their providers often may not know all of the ins and outs of their particular program. No one should ever feel as if they are somehow at fault for their predicament just because they have had some trouble sorting through their insurance options. Referral services will relieve you of this headache. By contacting a facility with a free referral service, such as Amethyst Recovery, the patient is able to work with someone who knows a bit more about insurance and how it works in order to find the most suitable option.
It should be noted that a free referral service is not simply a means of casting patients who are unable to pay onto someone else. To do so would go against our moral obligation to help anyone and everyone that we can. As such, patients will only be referred to another facility if we are unable to find a suitable option for them after analyzing their insurance information and the various options granted by their insurance provider.
This is fairly common among facilities that offer a free referral service, although it is not necessarily a compulsory feature. In other words, some facilities may not take the time to fully assess the patient’s insurance options. If a patient calls and says that they are unable to pay, some facilities might immediately begin finding cheaper facilities for the patient to contact. It is not common, but it does happen. At Amethyst Recovery, we do not do this. We do not see the benefit of turning patients away if there is a chance that we can help them. We’ll talk a bit more about this process below.
How the Referral Process Works
The above paragraphs should probably have given a fairly decent view into how our free referral process works. That said, we’d like to break it down further into a few key steps. This will help you to gain a clearer picture of what you can expect when first contacting Amethyst Recovery to inquire about your payment options and expectations for addiction treatment.
First, it is important to understand that we offer placement to anyone who contacts us. If you have formally expressed a genuine interest in receiving treatment, and have contacted us to begin the process of utilizing our free referral service, then you will not be at any risk of losing your placement due to new patients being admitted while we are still working out the kinks of your insurance program. We are not in the habit of leading our patients on a wild goose chase. Depending upon your insurance program, we might not be able to accommodate you. But we will not fill your spot until we know this for sure.
Once the patient has been placed, we will offer a free assessment to determine what type and level of care is needed. Maybe the patient needs the basic program of counseling alongside other forms of therapy that we offer. In some cases, medication assisted therapy such as Vivitrol treatment might be required. The form and intensity of care required will naturally have an impact on whether or not the patient is covered by their insurance program, so our free referral service would be fundamentally incomplete without a proper assessment. This assessment is also beneficial for us, since we will already know a bit about the patient if we are able to admit them.
The next step of our free referral service is one of the most important: verification of insurance options. We will examine your insurance information and contact your provider to see what we can do for you. In some cases, full treatment might be granted. In other cases, the patient’s insurance might only cover them for a limited duration of time. Unfortunately, some patients will not be covered for addiction treatment at all. If there are any possible options for you, we will assess you and give you a proper rundown so that you can decide which step is to be taken next.
If it is decided that the patient is able to be admitted, then we will begin that process as swiftly as possible. If, however, there are no options available that will allow us to admit the patient, then we will refer them to a facility that can accommodate their financial means as well as their treatment needs. This can be a delicate balance to strike, but we will ensure that lackluster recommendations are not made. Even if it cannot happen within our walls, our sole wish is for the patient to receive the treatment they need in order to begin a strong and timely recovery.
Why Referrals Are Important to Us
There are many reasons that we find it important to offer this free referral service. A couple of these have been mentioned already. For instance, as stated earlier, we feel that we have a moral obligation to do everything that we can for any prospective patient who seeks our help. Even if insurance and other financial circumstances make it impossible for us to treat a patient, we do not want to turn them away without knowing that they will be cared for. Gaining a bit of closure by ensuring that they will find the treatment they seek makes it a little bit easier for us to sleep at night.
One of the other reasons that we have already mentioned for offering this free referral service is the fact that one of our first steps entails a free assessment. If we have to refer a patient to another facility, we do not simply want to find the cheapest one. While it is important to accommodate the patient’s financial needs, it is far more important to make sure that they will receive the level and type of care that is necessary for them to begin a process of recovery. The facility that works best for one patient might not be as suitable for another. If we learn about the patient’s history before making our referral, then we can make a much better recommendation.
There are other reasons for offering our free referral service that have not been mentioned in this article, but have still been mentioned in the past. One of them is that there are many personality myths and stereotypes regarding addicts and alcoholics, and some people tend to stigmatize them and treat them poorly as a result. While we have nothing but respect for other treatment centers, there are some states in which state-funded facilities are underfinanced and occasionally staffed with individuals whose interest lies in receiving a steady paycheck rather than helping addicts recover from their disease. We want to make sure that we refer patients to facilities in which they will be truly cared for, and not treated as inconveniences.
Another reason that we tend to sympathize with those in poor financial condition is that we understand the cost of addiction. Furthermore, we understand that this cost does not just weigh upon the addict. The unfortunate reality is that addiction is a family disease, and each member tends to feel its consequences. Some families will have to pay for the addict’s care, but they are not always in the best financial shape to do so. If not for the help of our free referral service, they might feel as if they have to either send their loved one to a less qualified facility or else put up money that they do not technically have. We cannot, in good conscience, allow them to make that choice without helping them to weigh options that they might not have known existed.
Finally, we offer our free referral service because we recognize that this is not about us. While we take great pride in the level of care that we are able to offer, we cannot help everyone. In Miracle on 34th Street, Santa wanted children to get the toys they wanted, even if Macy’s did not carry them. In similar fashion, we just want addicts to recover. If you are able to afford our program, but we feel for one reason or another that you would benefit from seeking treatment elsewhere, then we might still refer you. This is a rare occurrence, but it is not outside the realm of possibility. It’s simply the right thing to do.
Other Benefits Offered by Amethyst
There are a few benefits offered by Amethyst Recovery aside from our free referral service. If we conclude that we are able to treat a patient, then they will be able to benefit from our personalized and varied treatment programs. Addiction treatment is not one-size-fits-all. As noted twice already, this is one of the reasons that our free referral service begins with a free assessment. We want to know what we are dealing with from the onset, so that we can provide the best style of care as required by the patient.
Another major benefit of seeking treatment at Amethyst Recovery is our court liaison program for addicts with legal issues. Criminal recidivism rates are often quite high among addicts, and they often leave behind a trail of legal troubles that will come to haunt them long after they have sought recovery. We do not want addicts to suffer harsh legal punishments in the midst of their recovery if such circumstances can be avoided. As such, we do our best to work with the courts and with various lawyers to ensure that our patients are able to make the best possible case for themselves.
Of course, one of the primary benefits offered by Amethyst Recovery is that we allow patients to seek a full spectrum of care by obtaining temporary housing in one of our sober living facilities. Recovery does not end with treatment, and transitioning into the outside world can be difficult for those who are still in early recovery. By staying at one of our sober living facilities following completion of our treatment programs, addicts can continue their recovery within the confines of a safe, structured, and (most importantly) sober environment.
These are just a few of the many benefits offered by Amethyst in addition to our free referral service. If you have any questions about the many services that we offer, feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience. We will answer any and all inquiries that you might have. The decision to undergo treatment is one of the most important life decisions that you will ever make. You should not have to go in blindfolded. With our help, you won’t have to.
