In 2015, drugs and alcohol played a role in 9,784 deaths, nearly 14% above the drug-related death rate for the year prior. While the opioid-related death toll only rose by 16% nationwide, it rose by 75% in Florida for a grand total of 779 lives claimed. In particular, heroin overdoses rose by 780% over a ten-year period ending in 2016. Meanwhile, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism ranked Florida as the thirteenth-highest state for rates of consumption, with alcohol playing a role in 4,762 overdoses.
At one point in time, experts blamed the high rate of prescription drug abuse in Florida on the looming presence of pill mills, as the state contained all but 7 of the top 100 oxycodone dispensers in the United States. This number has since changed, but in 2010 more than 650 million painkillers were prescribed in the state of Florida alone. Use of prescription benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium are also quite high.
