Signs, Symptoms & Treatment for alcohol addiction

Residential inpatient treatment can go by many names: inpatient treatment, or inpatient rehab, residential rehab, to name a few. They are all the same types of addiction treatment and represent the highest level of care a rehab center can offer. It  allows recovering patients to focus on healing, immersing them in a positive environment away from the temptations, triggers, and stressors of normal, everyday life. Here at Amethyst, our state-of-the-art facilities allow us to provide a luxury detox and addiction treatment experience in the charming beach town of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Residential Rehab: What Is Inpatient Treatment?

Residential treatment, also referred to as inpatient treatment, is the highest and most intensive level of alcohol and drug addiction treatment available after medical detox. At this level of care, patients stay onsite at a facility and have round-the-clock access to medical professionals—24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients have access to experienced addiction professionals who are dedicated to their behavioral, emotional, and even mental health well-being, as well as a host of other team members including:

  • Clinical case managers
  • Continuing care coordinators
  • Physicians and nurses
  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists
  • Marriage and family therapist
  • Nutritionists
  • Fitness coaches
  • Financial advisors

Benefits of Residential Addiction Treatment

Inpatient promotes structure and stability while also facilitating both physical and psychological recovery. It gives patients the opportunity to reside in a safe and controlled environment free from potential triggers or harmful influences. The immersive nature of this treatment program can be a crucial aspect of breaking the negative cycle of addiction and relapse, and to providing long term sobriety.

We use traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, 12-step groups, holistic therapy modalities, and more to get to the root of a patient’s substance abuse problem. Our goal is to empower everyone who enters our facility, and give them the tools to make positive changes in their future.

Residential treatment is ideal for those who:

  • Have severe to moderate levels of drug addiction (as according to the criteria of the DSM-5)
  • Lack the support or conditions to try and overcome addiction on their own
  • Face high risk of experiencing severe drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms
  • Found outpatient or other less-intensive levels of care to be ineffective
  • Have previously relapsed
  • Have a mental health condition (also known as dual diagnosis)

It’s also an effective and practical option for Individuals who are experiencing severe or prolonged withdrawal effects that persist after detoxification. For individuals who have already completed  residential inpatient treatment and still want professional observation or whose addiction is not severe enough to qualify for the diagnostic criteria for residential treatment.

How Long is Inpatient Drug Rehab?

The length of inpatient rehab will vary based on the needs of every individual. Precisely how long a person is recommended to say in residential treatment is a decision that is ultimately determined by the severity of the individual’s addiction and their unique treatment needs. Here’s how it works: During the intake process, your onboarding team will conduct several evaluations regarding your physical and psychological state. Some of the factors that can affect how long your rehab treatment lasts is:

  • The type of drug
  • Length and severity of addiction
  • Previous addiction treatment/relapses
  • Presence of a mental illness

One of the most popular durations is a 14 day inpatient rehab, although inpatient treatment can be as short as 7 days or as long as 30, 60, or 90+ days long. Naturally, longer treatments often are the most effective in overcoming addiction and the National Institute on Drug Abuse recommends a minimum of 90 days for either inpatient or outpatient addiction treatment.

What Is Residential Rehab Like?

Inpatient treatment is considered to be the most intensive type of addiction treatment for a reason. Many of the rules that help make residential programs as effective as they are, can also cause them to be a drastic change in lifestyle from what an addicted person is accustomed to:

  • Most residential treatment centers have limitations on the coming and goings of patients, both for the safety of the individual as well as other patients.
  • Guest visits and phone or email communications with the outside world may be limited. This encourages patients to wholly focus on themselves and their recovery.
  • Daily schedules are provided, including treatment sessions as well as free time and mealtimes.
  • Drug or alcohol use is strictly prohibited and patients are held accountable by random drug testing.

Treatment

During inpatient treatment, patients will reconnect with themselves through a combination of individual and group therapy and counseling. These sessions will not only help them recognize triggers and patterns in past behavior but will give them the tools to overcome them and change their mindsets for a prosperous, drug-free future. Further, doing so with a group of peers adds an invaluable layer of social support to the recovery process.

In addition to traditional drug addiction treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), many facilities including Amethyst Recovery Center, incorporate holistic therapies to encourage healing of the emotional and spiritual and addiction to the physical body. These types of alternative treatments include things like yoga, massage, and acupuncture.
