Treating Adderall Addiction

Adderall-Rehab-Detox-Recovery-Overdose

Adderall is a prescription, brand-name version of the stimulant drug amphetamine. Adderall has approved medical uses in the U.S. It’s given to patients to treat ADHD, and less commonly, narcolepsy. Despite its use as a prescription medication, it has a high potential for abuse. If someone becomes addicted, it would be difficult for them to stop using the drug without going to an Adderall rehab facility.

There are different types of addiction treatment programs and rehab facilities for Adderall addiction. They may differ in approach, cost, types of therapy used, location and amenities among other factors.

Finding the right Adderall rehab facility is important for someone facing an addiction to this drug. Adderall has the potential to be dangerous or deadly. Over time it can lead to death from heart attack or stroke. It can also cause serious psychiatric symptoms and conditions including anxiety, depression, and psychosis.

The effects of Adderall both in the short- and long-term are similar to the illegal drug cocaine.

Types of Rehab Facilities for Adderall Addiction

The following are some of the types of rehab facilities a person might seek treatment at if they have an Adderall addiction.

Medical Detox

medical detox isn’t a treatment for addiction but is instead something that is necessary before a person begins treatment. Medical detox can occur in a standalone facility, but more often it’s part of an inpatient rehab program.

During medical detox, patients are provided with medical supervision and support as they go through Adderall withdrawal. Medical detox is safer than trying to go through withdrawal at home without medical care. Adderall withdrawal can be very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

Long-Term Residential Treatment

A long-term residential rehab program is also called a therapeutic community. Long-term rehab can often last for anywhere from six months to a year. During long-term treatment, patients’ treatment focuses not only on their Adderall addiction but also on helping them build the skills they need for a productive life.

Long-term residential treatment is usually something people with only the most severe addictions or psychiatric disorders participate in.

Short-Term Residential Treatment

When someone is addicted to Adderall, participation in a short-term inpatient rehab is most common, at least as their first step. A short-term rehab program is what we most commonly think of. These programs usually last for around 30 days although some can be shorter and some longer.

During inpatient rehab, patients check into the facility and spend the night there. Counseling is done individually and also in group settings. There may be other forms of therapy and activities offered to patients as well. The goal of an inpatient rehab program is holistic care and treatment that yields positive long-term results.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)

A partial hospitalization program is usually offered at a rehab center, and it’s also called day treatment. The only major difference between a PHP and inpatient rehab is that participants can leave treatment in the evenings and sleep at their home.

Outpatient Rehab

There are many types of outpatient rehab including intensive outpatient programs, as well as less structured and supervised programs. The least intensive forms of outpatient rehab are usually simple drug education programs.

How To Choose An Adderall Rehab Facility

When someone is selecting an Adderall rehab facility, they have a lot of available choices. It’s important to choose the right fit based on specific factors. These factors include:

  • What is the severity of the addiction? If someone has been using Adderall for only a few months and they don’t use large doses, an outpatient treatment program may be a good fit. On the other hand, if someone is a severe and long-term recreational Adderall user, they’re not likely to receive intensive enough treatment in an outpatient program.
  • Are multiple substances an issue? It’s not uncommon for someone addicted to Adderall to be addicted to other substances or at least abuse them. This has to be considered when selecting an Adderall rehab facility.
  • What is a person’s home life like? Is it supportive and safe, or could it be problematic to their treatment and recovery? Some people benefit from leaving their home for inpatient treatment.
  • Does the individual want or need specialized treatment? For example, there are certain treatments that are religious or cater to certain demographics, such as all-male or all-female rehab centers.

How Much Will Treatment In An Adderall Rehab Facility Cost?

It’s unfortunate, but there are cases where someone with an Adderall addiction doesn’t seek help because they are worried about the cost of treatment. There are options that people can utilize to help them cover the cost of addiction treatment, however.

One of the most important things to do is check with your insurance provider and determine whether or not a program might be recognized as an in-network provider. Under the Affordable Care Act, rehab and addiction treatment are considered essential care, and more often than not insurance can be used to pay for treatment.

It’s also important for people to understand that a luxury rehab center isn’t necessarily going to provide better treatment than a basic rehab facility. If someone can afford it, they might prefer the amenities of a luxury treatment center, but again, these amenities don’t determine the quality of care.

It’s important to look for a rehab facility that provides evidence-based care first and foremost.

Effective Treatment

When choosing a rehab facility for Adderall addiction treatment, it should follow some general principles. Some of the concepts that a rehab center should follow to improve treatment outcomes include:

  • Treatment plans need to be tailored to the individual. There’s not one specific treatment approach that’s going to be effective for every person. The individual needs to be the central focus of all treatment plans.
  • The complexity of addiction needs to be addressed during Adderall rehab. Addiction changes how the brain functions, and it also affects a person’s behavior, physical health and their relationships with others. A holistic rehab facility can take on these complexities and address all of the needs of the patient.
  • Services need to be readily available when someone is seeking addiction treatment.
  • Treatment needs to be engaging, and a person needs to be motivated to stay there. Staying in treatment for long enough is one of the number one factors that determines how effective it will be overall.
  • Behavioral therapy is a core component of most addiction treatment plans. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, in particular, is the basis of most treatment programs.
  • A person’s treatment plan can and is likely to change over time. Treatment plans should be modified as a person progresses or their needs shift.

The Benefits of Residential Treatment for Adderall Addiction

Making the decision to go to an inpatient Adderall rehab program can be difficult. Patients have to leave their home and their families, as well as their jobs, or other responsibilities. That’s not easy, but the payoff can be something that changes the life of the patient.

Staying in treatment for long enough and also receiving adequate, comprehensive treatment are important indicators of long-term outcomes for addiction treatment.

Some of the benefits of inpatient rehab for Adderall addiction include:

  • Dual diagnosis care can be provided for someone with co-occurring mental health disorders. Drug addiction is often accompanied by undiagnosed or untreated psychiatric conditions. During inpatient, residential rehab, these conditions can be diagnosed and effectively treated, which improves overall outcomes and quality of life for the patient.
  • Holistic treatment can be provided. When someone is addicted to Adderall, treatment is about more than helping them to stop using that drug. The person’s physical and spiritual needs should be considered as well.
  • When you attend inpatient treatment for an Adderall addiction, it gives you the opportunity to leave the environment of your addiction behind. This includes stress and other triggers that could increase the likelihood of a relapse.
  • There is an inherent sense of support that takes place in residential rehab, from both the staff as well as other patients.

What Is an Outpatient Adderall Rehab?

Outpatient rehab refers to a scenario where people don’t become patients or check into a facility. Instead, they receive addiction treatment on an outpatient basis. Outpatient rehab may take place at rehab centers, community facilities, nonprofit organizations or therapy centers.

Outpatient rehab can be fairly informal, or it can be intensive. There are a wide variety of program formats and approaches that fall into the category of outpatient rehab. During outpatient rehab, people come together – often in a group setting – although some programs might be individual.

Types of Outpatient Rehab for Adderall Addiction

Some of the different types of rehab programs that may fall into the category of outpatient rehab include:

PHP or Day Treatment

Support-From-Friend-Sunset-Outstretched-Hand

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is also called day treatment. A PHP is the most intensive type of outpatient rehab and is in many ways more similar to inpatient rehab.

With day treatment, patients come to the treatment center every morning, and they stay all day. They receive intensive addiction treatment and supplemental care. Then, at the end of the day, they return either to their home, or a sober living house.

With day treatment, the time commitment is significant and doesn’t allow many people to go to school or work during treatment.

A PHP or day treatment program may take up five days a week, or sometimes every day of the week. The treatment day is very scheduled and regimented, and medication management and dual diagnosis care are often part of the program.

Some people may finish a PHP in a few weeks, but for other people, this form of outpatient rehab may take longer.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

An intensive outpatient program or IOP offers a less significant time commitment than day treatment, and it’s more flexible. An IOP for Adderall addiction might include meetings that are held in the evenings so that it’s after school or work ends.

With an IOP for Adderall, participants will usually have to commit to several meetings a week. As they progress in their treatment and recovery, they might attend this type of outpatient rehab less and less frequently. A lot of the focus in an IOP for Adderall addiction, or any substance use disorder, is on managing stress and triggers in daily life, and how to prevent a relapse.

Continuing Care

The term continuing care is a broad one. For some people, continuing care includes meeting in a group setting at a rehab or treatment center perhaps once or twice a week. During this time, participants can talk about their experiences and their successes and failures with a group of peers.

There is also 12-step program such as Narcotics Anonymous that someone might prefer as continuing care when they are attempting to abstain from Adderall.

Who Should Go To Outpatient Rehab for Adderall?

Adderall-Outpatient-Positive-Healthy-Recovery

Outpatient Adderall treatment does have some benefits. For example, its flexibility allows participants to continue with their daily lives while receiving treatment for their addiction. Outpatient Adderall rehab allows participants to keep up with family and work responsibilities. It’s less expensive than inpatient treatment, and a person doesn’t have to leave their home.

However, it’s not necessarily the right fit for everyone who is addicted to Adderall, at least not as the first step in treatment.

If someone has a severe, long-term addiction or has complicating mental or physical health conditions, they may need to start with inpatient Adderall treatment. Then, when they successfully complete the inpatient rehab program, they might step down into a lower intensity outpatient treatment program.

Some people might also begin Adderall treatment with outpatient rehab in certain circumstances. A person who could be a good fit for outpatient Adderall rehab includes someone who:

  • Has a mild addiction to Adderall or only occasionally abuses it
  • Doesn’t use other substances with Adderall
  • Doesn’t require a medical detox for withdrawal symptoms
  • Has no mental health disorders, at least not ones that are untreated
  • Hasn’t tried other Adderall treatment programs previously
  • Has a strong home support system

What Is An Adderall PHP?

If someone is struggling with the compulsive, out-of-control use of Adderall that comes from addiction, treatment options are available. One such option is an Adderall partial hospitalization program or PHP. A PHP is also sometimes called day treatment. A PHP is very similar to inpatient rehab, and the intensity level of treatment is high.

Features of a PHP for Adderall addiction include:

  • Participants are expected to come to the treatment center anywhere from five to seven days a week, starting in the morning.
  • During a PHP, the day and treatment plan is very scheduled, as in the case of residential Adderall rehab. It can include a combination of therapeutic modalities, supplemental treatments, and medication management.
  • A PHP does allow patients to return home in the evenings.
  • If someone can’t return home for some reason, they may leave a PHP and go to a sober living house.

What Should You Expect During an Adderall Partial Hospitalization Program?

As with residential rehab, if someone seeks treatment in a PHP for Adderall addiction, they are going to be in a very structured environment. This is important to reduce chaos and help a person either stabilize as they try to stop using Adderall, or to remain stable following inpatient rehab.

These environments usually include group meetings, offering elements of social support and engagement.

As with inpatient rehab, the group meetings held in an Adderall PHP may follow the 12-step framework. During group therapy, which is facilitated by a center staff member, there are usually topics introduced, and then patients share their thoughts and experiences on these topics.

PHP also offers individual therapy. Individual therapy occurs as patients meet with a counselor or therapist one-on-one. During these sessions, the focus is on individual thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors the patient might have. The goal is often to help patients understand and identify their unhealthy thoughts and behaviors and then work on making sustainable changes.
